NTSE or National Talent Search Examination is a very prestigious scholarship program of India which is conducted by NCERT every year for 10th class students. NTSE is conducted with the aim of finding Talent students and nurturing them. Every year around 3-4 Lac students apply for this program and only 1000 students are awarded this scholarship.



NTSE gives a chance to get lifetime recognition as an NTSE scholar. NTSE is an objective type examination by which you get practice for upcoming competitive exams after 12th. It helps students develop deep understanding of concepts. In the final stage 1000 students are selected for scholarship until PhD. There will be no negative marking in Stage 1 or Stage 2.

NTSE Scholarships:

● Scholarship of 1250/- per month during 11th and 12th classes.
● Scholarship of 2000/- per month during UG and PG courses.
● Scholarship amount of PhD is based on UGC norms.

NTSE Eligibility:

All the candidates appearing for NTSE exam must go through the eligibility criteria before filling the application form. Candidates who don't satisfy the eligibility criteria won't be considered eligible for the exam. Here is the eligibility criteria set by NSTSS.

● Student must be currently studying in class 10 from a recognized school.
● Students who have applied for class 10 through open learning can also appear for the NTSE exam.
● Student age must be less than 18 years.
● Student must clear all classes 1st to 10th.


Application Fees:

● Application fee for Stage 1 will be decided as per  State/Union Territory policies.
● There is no application fee charged at Stage 2 of the NTSE.
●  The application fee has to be paid in the offline mode only.

How to apply for NTSE?

The registration process of NTSE exam is offline. You can get the application form from the office of Liaison officer or download from the official website. Candidates must submit their NTSE Application Form before the deadline after filling all the details and get it signed by the Principal. Application form can be sent by post to the Liaison officer. Minimum eligibility criteria must be fulfilled by candidates when applying for NTSE. Applicants must not be older than 18 years as on July 1 of the year. Applicants must fill all the details carefully and check it thoroughly before submitting the application form. No corrections are allowed once the form is submitted. Upon successful registration, candidates will be able to avail their admit cards. Admit cards will be available for applicants in the month of October for Stage 1 and Admit cards for Stage 2 in the month of May.

Steps to apply for NTSE:-

Step 1: Registration and Downloading Application Form
● Visit the official website of NTSE (www.ncert.nic.in)
● Click on link ‘Apply for NTSE 2019
● Candidates have to fill the following credentials:
* Candidates Name
* Date of birth
* Mobile Number
* Email ID
* Educational Qualification etc.
● After filling all the credentials click on ‘submit’
● Download the NTSE Application Form
               Or
Candidates can also get their Application Form from the office of Liaison Officer.
Step 2: Filling Details in NTSE Application form
Candidates have to fill the these details in the application form in their own handwriting:
Basic details, Category, Address and Educational details etc. Candidates have to affix their photograph and signature in the provided space.
Step 3: Candidates have to attest NTSE Application Form from their school Principal.
Step 4: Application fee as specified by the state/UT needs to be paid by the candidates.
Step 5: Candidates can submit their Application Form in the Liaison Office by post or visiting the address of liaison officer office.

Name - Without prefix or suffix just write the name as in birth certificate
Photo - Affix a self-attested passport size photograph
Father’s name - Complete name without any prefix of Mr/Dr./Prof

At what no. is the candidate among his/her brothers and sisters put 1, 2, 3, 4 etc according to order of age, among siblings.
Parental income - Tick the option as applicable: Upto 50,000 or 50,000- 1 lakh or 1 lakh- 2 lakh or 2 lakh- 5 lakh or More than 5 lakhs
Email address - A valid email address
Mobile number - A function 11-digit mobile number. It is important to fill this field.

Documents to be Attached with NTSE Form

Following is the list of documents that candidates must possess at the time of application form filling.

● Colored photograph not older than 6 months from the date of form filling
● Dark background
● No goggles only simple spectacles
● No makeup in the photograph clicked for the form
● Hair must be tied properly
● Photograph should be in school uniform
● Indian nationals do not have to produce any document with the application form.
● Students of Indian origin who are studying in class 10 from abroad, have to prove their Indian citizenship, so they have to attach a copy of class 9 marks

NTSE Exam Dates:

● NTSE Stage 1 exam is conducted in the month of November every year.
● NTSE Stage 2 exam is conducted in the month of May next year.

Application form:

Application forms for NTSE Stage 1 are released in July, August and September every year. Students should apply as soon as possible because registration of NTSE may off in August or September. Candidates can fill the form by taking from the office of Liaison Officer or downloading from the official website. Students need to fill separate application form for Stage 1 and Stage 2.

Exam Pattern: NTSE Stage 1

NTSE Stage 1 is a state level exam held in offline mode. It's an objective type test. The NTSE Question Paper consists of 200 MCQ type questions to be solved within duration of 240 minutes. Language of the exam is decided by State/Union Territory. NTSE Exam is divided in 2 sections:-
* Mental Ability Test or MAT (100 Questions)
* Scholastic Aptitude Test or SAT (100 Questions)

NTSE Stage 2:
It's a National Level exam when students have to compete on national level. The pattern of the exam is exactly the same as Stage 1 of the exam.

Syllabus for preparation:

MAT :- This section would test your reasoning ability. It also test your observational skills. As - Visualizing space and Spatial orientation.
SAT :- This section would test you in fields of Mathematics, Science and Social Sciences. There is no prescribed syllabus for SAT. However all the questions will be based on syllabus of class 9th and 10th.


How to crack NTSE?

● Learn all the concepts of Mathematics, Science and Social Sciences of your state board books.
● Choose your reference books wisely and stick to them.
● Don't build a massive library for yourself.
● The books you chose must have enough practice questions for MAT and SAT sections.
● Take as many tests as possible and evaluate your tests honestly to find out your strong points and weak points.
● Analyse your performance.
● Your aim for your own Mock Tests should be to obtain full marks in your strong points and improve weak points till exam.
● You should strengthen your MAT and SAT sections individually.
● Give sufficient time for both because you need to qualify in each sections separately.
● You have to practise and practise and practise.
● Solve puzzles like SUDOKU to improve your analytical skills.
● Solve a variety of questions to avoid surprise on exam day.

NTSE Results:

The results for NTSE is declared separately for Stage 1 (State Level Exam) and Stage 2 (National Level Exam). NTSE Results for Stage 1 are declared by the States/ UTs in January/ February and for Stage 2 the scores are declared in June by NCERT. The marks of the State level exam won't be added to the National Level exam scholarship. The qualifying scheme for both the stages are similar for General/ OBC: 40% marks and for SC/ ST/ PwD: 32% marks.

Only candidates qualifying in both the papers (MAT and SAT) separately will be considered for merit. Selection of the awardees will be made on the basis of total Marks obtained in MAT (Mental Ability Test) and SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) based on merit.

NTSE answer keys (stage 1 & Stage 2)

Answer keys for Stage 1 and Stage 2 are uploaded online within 5-7 days after the exam. Candidates who successfully qualify Stage 1 considered eligible for Stage 2 which is conducted in May.


Stage 1: State Level Examination

● Each state/ UTs conducts its own exam.
● This exam is primarily taken to recommend a given number of candidates for the 2nd level test, conducted by NCERT.
● The State/Union Territory will make a merit list of candidates those have cleared the minimum qualifying criteria in both the tests separately.


Stage 2: National Level Examination

This stage is also known as NTSE Final Stage, conducted by NCERT. There is no fee asked for Stage 2 Test.
● The scoring of OMR sheets for both the MAT and the SAT is checked through the computer.
● All possible precautions are taken and necessary checks applied while processing the result to ensure zero error result.
● The final awards are announced on the basis of combined scores of MAT and SAT.
● Only the selected candidates shall be informed by registered letter and through NCERT website www.ncert.nic.in
● The scholarship provided is of National Level and there is no state quota in this.
● Along with the individual results, NCERT also publish cut off scores for NTSE Stage II exam

NTSE Disbursement Of Scholarship

Scholarships will be awarded to selected students on the basis of final merit list once stage 2 result of NTSE is announced. NTSE qualifiers will be issued an award letter, certificate of merit and details of the disbursement of scholarship in due time by the division.

● Students have to submit a claim Bill every year as long as they want the academic scholarship.
● This document (Bill) will contain details about :-
* Student’s school/ college name and address
* Course they have opted for along with the various subjects and total marks secured in the particular year.
* An acceptance undertaking
* Character certificate to be filled by school principal
* Claim bill proforma for payment of scholarship asking details – bank account & advance receipt
* Annual Progress Report/Marksheet
● NTSE scholars will receive the scholarship amount by the online mode.
● They must obtain a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in order to be awarded the scholarship.
● If they fail to obtain the minimum marks then scholarship for that year will be forfeited.
● NTSE scholars will be rendered ineligible for NTSE scholarship if they fail to score the minimum aggregate for 2 consecutive or non-consecutive years.

NTSE Expected Cut Off

NCERT will release cut offs for both Stages varying category wise. The cut off is determined considering multiple factors such as difficulty level of the exam, number of candidates etc. Candidates can check below the expected cut off for NTSE Exam.

The final list will be declared online, category-wise in the following order:

● Minimum Qualifying Marks and Cut Off for different papers (category wise)
Candidates shall receive an award letter, certificate of merit and details of the disbursement of scholarship in due time by the division.

NTSE 2019 Qualifying Criteria

Q.  Where will I get the NTSE application form?

Q.  Will my scorecard be sent my home address?
Ans. No, candidates can only check their results online. No scorecard will be sent via any mode.

Q.  What are the basis for the merit list?
Ans. NTSE Merit List for both the stages is purely based on merit. All candidates who clear the Stage 1 test and secure the set cut off marks, will proceed on to the next stage. Candidates clearing stage 2 will be granted scholarships.

Q.  Can you explain the reservation policy in NTSE?

Q.  Is there any state quota applicable in NTSE?
Ans. In first round, there is a state quota in STSE (State Talent Secondary Examination). Candidates who will qualify STSE will be eligible to apply for the next round (NTSE).

Q.  How many scholarships are awarded every year through NTSE?
Ans. About 1000 scholarships are awarded every year through NTSE. Candidates will be allocated scholarships on the basis of final result only.

Q.  Is there any provision for rechecking or re-evaluation in NTSE exam?

Q.  For how long will the successful candidates be getting a scholarship?
Ans. The awardees studying Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Commerce, Vocational courses will get a scholarship up to Ph.D. level whereas students doing professional courses in Medicine, Engineering, Technology, Management and Law will get a scholarship up to second-degree level.
